Deep Well Farm Mud Run

Mud, Hay, Obstacles, and a 5k that will bring you to your knees!
I know, that combination sounds too good to be true, but that was the case  this Sunday at Deep Well Farm as they hosted Knoxville's first Mud Run! Contestants signed up in teams of five people and traversed pits of mud, tunnels, mountains of hay, and many other obstacles scattered over the track. I had the opportunity to help out with this massive undertaking, and I can say with a great deal of confidence that the event was a huge success! 500 runners got to test their mud-covered resolve, and had a blast all along the way. The proceeds also went to Habitat for Humanity,  and the weather could not have been more beautiful. (though after some thought, if it had been raining at a mud-run, I wouldn't have complained either)

With that said, here are some highlights from the run!
For all those people that i promised pictures, i will upload all 350 in a separate post. Its a little overwhelming haha.

 The starting line!

People were oozing anticipation at the beginning, and dirt from every pore at the end.

 Going strong!

 The ever-helpful staff!

Slap on some war paint folks, this wont be easy!

Glasses... why didn't I wear glasses?? Mud in your eyes makes running a little more interesting.

 The families were so encouraging!!

I'd say don't slip, but covered in mud? do slip, its more fun that way!

Don't underestimate the younger contestants when they're covered in mud.  How many mud pies did you make when you were a kid? I bet this kid has you beat!

Running is tiring enough, but with 10 pounds of mud in your shoes?

"Hey, this mud feels great!! lets take a break."

I mean, that's where i take my afternoon nap before chemistry.

When you're covered in mud, you might as well celebrate!

Mmmm, I'm sure that mud on your teeth tasted like chocolate.

They finished strong, and finished together!

hahaha, if only they ran the track that way.

I'm not sure if they were excited to finish, or go take a shower.... well, probably both.

Some of the teamwork out there was great!

Let me see you're angry face!

I've run 5k's before and this was not to be underestimated.

You know, there's this patch of mud right on his forehead. Which is no big deal, until you realize... he probably landed on his head at some point. You should be ashamed if your laughing at this man's pain!
haha, in all honesty he didn't injure himself though.

There's me! and that poor fella on the right isn't upset because there's mud in his eyes, it's because i stole his water bottle.

Boom! bonus points for treating the mud crawl like a slip and slide.

Expect all of the pictures here in the next couple of days!
I'f you've got feedback, or comments, or need of a photographer, I'd love to hear back from ya!
Next blog will be on some more UT adventures, and I am also working on a "semester in review" post,

keep me updated folks! thanks!

Adventures downtown and Mardi Growl

Now that the weather is starting to warm up, its only natural to find ourselves outside and downtown! He decided to check out a lot of the cool sites, and some of the less seen things!
Upon arriving downtown, we discovered a dog festival going on, and that was interesting to say the least!

Okay, This dog is a total boss. What you can't see is its actually a great dane, and that is not a bed, its her dress.

You know, just your friendly neighborhood Spay Shuttle. Where dogs and cats have arms, wear space suits, and wake up feeling a little... different.

Okay, this dog was awesome! and her owner was hillarious, though i would hate to have to walk this dog. Its bigger than I am!

After spending an hour at a dog festival and realizing that we didn't have a dog with us, we decided it was time to adventure around town! so we found some prime locations and had some fun!

"Oh long Johnson! Why i oughta"
There is a bit of a gorgeous urban decay here.

"Adam! Come here! look at these guy's blinds! Its like the coolest thing i have ever seen!"

"OHMYGOSH! Lets take some senior pics!"
"this will look great in the yearbook!"
Can I just say, this took a while? and I didn't exactly think out the whole getting down barefoot thing.

Back for Round Two

Hey guys! sorry it has been so long since my last post! There has been a lot going on, but we're finally ready to get started with round two of this!

At first i considered blaming the delay on the economy, but somehow that didn't sound right.
And then i considered using "the sun was in my eyes!" but... that's my excuse for missing a Frisbee throw.
I even considered jumping on the bandwagon, and blame all my problems on Obama, However!
I managed to resist the political temptation to blame a man who has clearly worked so hard to double the national debt, and stabilize the (un)employment rates, because the simple fact is, i was waiting for this....

My new baby :)

Oh, and by the way, before you freak out, I like Obama,  i just think political jokes (regardless of party) are funny, so don't get your donkeys in a twist you democrats!

During my first semester the biggest compliments i was getting on my posts were on my photography, which were all greatly appreciated, and with that in mind, i am going to try and put a bigger emphasis on the photography!
So, let's catch back up,

My semester is going great so far! in addition to classes i am now working a job as a math tutor!
Yup, get to work here now.
the only part you don't see is the endless hill that i have to walk everyday to get there...

Although i must admit this semester has been much more challenging so far! I've learned that my personality is not well suited to going to class at six o'clock at night. Classes like that are... how can I put this... NO BUENO. take my advice and treat those classes like they have staph or something! Also, dont schedule all math classes. mix some gen-ed courses in there, or your brain will scramble by the end of the day. I moved into a different room in a different dorm, and got a pretty sweet setup!

just ask my new roommate here.
This is Nellie!
and then the guy in the red shirt is Austin.

I had a bit of an adventure with this dog here. I think that is a story big enough for another entry though!
Admit it, you just covered your mouth with your fingertips, and quietly went "awhhhh!"

So, my plans for this summer is get get an internship somewhere on this half of the country, and I'll be set! Next semester I'll  be getting at an apartment at Quarry Trail, so, hit me up if we are going to be neighbors! Thats where I've been! so tell me about you!  also, if you have any requests for blog topics or photography, hit me up, and I'll try to work anything in!

with that in mind, be checking in soon, as more blogs will be coming soon! I've got one coming up about downtown Knoxville and Mardi Gras Growl!

so, wipe that grin off of your face son!

Sites to see

I know it has been a while since i posted a blog, but, that is the way things go. With papers, projects, tests, and finals due just around the corner, I seemed to run out of time to go take pictures.

However!
good news!
I managed to to take a few of campus and of Knoxville!
I had some requests for some of the "unsung spots" on campus, and honestly, I can tell you already, after two days of scoping out this will not be my only blog on the topic. There's enough places to climb off of the beaten track to last you your whole time here.
This spot is just a short walk from Presidential courtyard

In Between the University center and "The hill"
I have to admit, one warmer afternoon i thought this would
be a good place to work on a paper, but it turns out its
a really good place to take a nap...

Around the backside of Ayres Hall, there is an open courtyard with some great places to sit.
Despite the large number of people that have classes in Ayres, this area still stays
fairly quiet, and deserted! This spot is completely underrated.

The World's Fair Park!
Okay, okay, its not an "unsung" spot, Anyone who's ever been to
Knoxville knows about it, and you'll find people at the park all of the time,
but that doesn't detract from how great the place is.
They hold events at it all of the time.
(and obviously the world fair is held here)
The pavilion on the left is an open stage, that anyone, at any time can jump on.

Andy Holt walkway
If you don't like the amphitheater here you'll like the McClung plaza just off of it, and if
you don't like either of those, the walkway itself has open sections every 150 feet. And
if your soul is so deprived of any joy to the point you can't enjoy any of this, then...
well, i mean, theres hotlines for that sort of stuff, come on, I'm no psychiatrist.
BUT! anyways! back to this;
The walkway won the "keep Knoxville beautiful" award.
I know right? it almost makes you want to shout,
"Cool story bro! wanna tell it again??"

Well, This spot has no name...
But that doesn't change it!
I just want to point out that EVERY other bench on campus faces
towards the walkway that it is on, however, someone came
along and flipped this one around, facing downtown.
for a good reason I'd say.

Before it Gets too cold

Well, This last week got pretty hectic and i didn't have a lot of time to get a new post up, however, i did still have time to go out and take some pictures!

Well, for the outdoor enthusiast, Knoxville is the place to be, Pidgeon forge and Gatlinburg are just around the corner, but even in downtown Knoxville there is plenty to do!

This is Ijam's Nature center!
(prounced like the Iam's dog food brand for some reason...)

Ijam's nature center is a bit of a suprise in the middle of Knoxville.
Its actually only 4.5 miles from the dorms on campus, but it has a couple miles worth of hiking trails.

John and I after an epic frisbee rescue.
So, lesson learned; when playing frisbee, don't try to throw a curve shot near the lake. It won't end well.
I only wish i could have gotten pictures of me desperately attempting to dive into the lake, before John and Montana talked me out of it.
A stick worked just as well as diving in would have apparently.
For the record John, Diving in would have been more fun!
But, i digress...
Montana Showing off her beastly balance!
Living on campus is great, but it can get so noisy with your Roommate blasting music, drunk people arguing outside of the dorm at two in the morning, and heaven knows what else is going on in student's life at any given time of day. I Personally think that getting some time away from the noise (and the people) is Awesome!

John Meditating over an Asian stereotype joke i made.
After an hour of meditation, he concluded that it wasn't true and offensive.
( i kid, i'm not racist, you trolls)

This is the first of many outdoor blogs I'm planning on doing and in the future I'm going to focus on some of the sights to see and the highlights and things like that.
